Dad and I fished offshore. We knew the reefs were quiet so we stayed close and played with some mackeral. We ended up with 10 fish for the 2 days with 6 spotties and 4 spanyards.
This one dad is holding went 7.5kg wich was our best but all fish were great eating size. We got most of our fish on the troll, and used red wnd white skirts over a pilly trolled deep and slow. I also got a school mac jigging a spanyid maniac on my light rod - great fun but the most impressive thing I saw was a few spanish macs free jumping!! Just awesome sight.
Cheers, Paul.
Have you ever being on the water madly casting your old favorite popper to surface smashing Trevally and Tailor, to have them explode the water all round your lure eating anything that move,
to only ignore your popper. You could just keep casting and hopefully one would eventually take a look at your popper?
In times like these you should change lures and how about trying a D.O.A Chug head to turn any of your Soft plastics into a popper! Then you have a popper that is soft, realistic action and subtle. Awesome for those timid or spooky fish. As well as a making walking pop actions you can pause and allow your popper to slowing sink into the strike zone.
Mac Tuna
MIkey - Tailer on plastics
Went out for a fish on Thursday with Mikey, we ventured into the bay to have a go at the Spotties. It was Mikey’s first time, so we played with the small Mack tuna that are prolific at the monument, landing & releasing 10 we also landed a small Yellowtail Kingfish, Bream, Trevally, Mosses Perch and small Queenies.
We hoped plastics around Little Halls Reefs while we were waiting for the birds to show us were the Mack Tuna and Spotties were. You should have seen this, I caught this grinner and as I was bringing him in a Spotties came in and had a go at him so Mikey dropped his plastic into the water and the Spottie circled it twice then smacked it and scream off but unfortunately he dropped it, but it was awesome to watch!
The whole thing at the side of the boat!! Then the birds showed up and we started throwing 14g R 2 Sea Metal slugs into the schools with multiple double hook ups. Mikey had trouble getting the smile off his face. We saw a couple of Spotties landed by guys trolling but there were no big numbers of them around that day.
Cheers Mick.
Just as well a moving picture says a thousand words... :)
Kate thought she would like to try a bit of fly fishing while on holiday. Having attended the fly casting day Hooked on Angling had with Nial Logan and Gordon Low some time back, (and doing no practice since) - she like all 12 year olds thought she knew what she was doing.
Apparently she did listen! This is her first ever fish on fly, a nice 3lb brown trout. Lucky for her her holiday was in the south island of New Zealand!
Don't 12 year olds know the meaning of "ímpossible"?
