SOCIAL COMP - ROUND 3
Steady Rain Friday night and Saturday morning greeted our 13 teams for Round 3 of the Hooked on Mixed Species Catch & Release Series Social Comp. I would like to thank the 9 teams that turned up.
There was a lot of shaking heads & 'I wish I was still in bed' comments going around as anglers got ready for the 6am start. After a few phone calls to see where people were, like Brad Fuller who slept through his alarm & Peter Morris who was busy checking the radar on the web while drinking his hot choco-latte in his nightie - (turning up at 8 am).
After a delayed start, 9 teams headed off. With the rain slowly easing over the morning, the guys enjoyed great morning fishing with heaps of fish landed. Most guys headed towards the lower reaches of the river.
Kim Vitale and Peter Morris enjoyed a great session around Munna Bridge, landing 14 trevally & 2 tailor. They used a mix of poppers and prawn plastics to take out the 1st prize. The boys said it went off from about 8am till 10am with a fish a cast for a while there. They just had to try and get the legal ones (30cm minimum size for comp) Average size was about 38cm.
Ben & Nathan Cooper came in a close 2nd. They headed to the river mouth area where they landed 10 fish and 3 species: Bream, Trevally & Tailor. The boys used a combination of soft plastics, poppers and bibbed lures to get their bag, working them from the shallows back into the deeper water. They found most fish came from the drop offs early, then they got more fish in the shallows as the tide came in. TAKE NOTE!!
3rd were series favorites Justin McMahon & B-Rad Fuller. They landed 10 fish & 2 species - tailor & bream, using mainly soft plastics. Gulp 2” Shrimp in Banana Prawn colour was B-rad's go to lure, and Justin's was Squidgies Wrigglers. The boys started in the Woods, then started hopping spot to spot along the Gympie Tce to Tewantin stretch to get their bag.
Banger & I (Mick Geary) had an awesome mornings fishing. We headed to the Frying Pan area first up to try and get a tailor or two - no success. Banger got us off to a flying start with a 28cm bream on a Gulp 4” minnow in banana prawn colour. Then next cast a 46cm flathead, I was doing a great job as net boy at this stage. After getting a few more small fish we decided to head up stream to fish the Tewantin stretch hoping for some trevally action, but could only get some bream. We fished the jetties then moved to the deeper water - then back to the boats. We kept rotating our spots as they got quiet.
Using a mix of Gulp 2” shrimp, minnow and turtle back worm in Banana, peppered prawn colours as well as disco shrimp colour in turtle back worms, we also got a couple of fish on Zip bait Hickory in shrimp colour and Ecogear sx48 bibbed lures. |
